'Hold Me Closer Tiny Dancer' is a project I worked on with Emily Stein at the International Junior Ballroom Dancing Championships in Blackpool, 2016. The series explores the unique relationships that form between the dancers, who have often been dancing together since a very young age and spend a lot of time together in close physical contact.
Our subjects came from all over the world, from Japan to South Africa. Their personalities varied considerably, as did the way they interacted with the camera. They were used to being in a scenario where they're always performing, and we attempted to show this in the stiffness of their poses while highlighting their unique relationships and individuality. Many of these kids had been dancing together for years, even though they were so young. We really were struck by the intimate and intense bonds between these children.
